The Hiking Backpack

If you enjoy hiking and camping you most likely have some type of pack you use to carry your items in. For decades the basic design was modeled after the packs carried by service people in the field of forestry. These were adapted for use by scouts who would often go on overnight camping excursions. Today, you can still find basic utility bags available for purchase, but there are also some specially designed items as well. While most styles are created for adults you can find some smaller versions made as for kids too.

A child’s pack is usually made with wide shoulder straps and lightweight materials. The outer surface material is usually nylon or polyester to keep it light enough for a child to carry comfortably. The difference between a design made for hiking and a design used for school books is the addition of an external water bottle pocket. The kid’s version will have a large main compartment with a smaller one placed on the outside with a beverage pocket on the side. This beverage holder is also normally found on adult models as well.

Adult models are made in a style that appears longer than classic backpacks with some designs having the ability to carry a rolled sleeping bag. Many of the ones that are designed for hiking and camping have external frames that form a rigid structure to attach other items to. The space directly below the bag area is usually rolled blankets or sleeping bags are attached. Large backpacks usually have many external compartments to hold all sorts of gear you might need along the trail.

Most newer models are made with water resistant materials including the zippers used as closures. Some have pockets made with open mesh material so you can place items inside that need better air circulation, such as a wet swimming suit. There are also additional loops sewn onto the outer surface designed to hold tools, like a small hand ax. The interiors are usually lined with a special material that helps keep moisture away from your body. This helps you to stay cool and comfortable no matter how long you are walking with your pack.
